#ShineYourLight: Paula Kahn

#ShineYourLight is our new series in which we Glitz & interview our favorite groundbreaking artists & activists who inspire us by shining their light on issues they are most passionate about. This week we caught up with activist Paula Kahn who raises consciousness on the intersections between indigenous rights, environmental & migrant justice, the war on drugs, and the arms trade. This shining powerhouse is running for Congress in California, you can volunteer with her campaign here

Tell us a little about yourself, how you #ShineYourLight & what do you choose to shine it on?

I raise consciousness on the intersections between indigenous rights, environmental & migrant justice, the war on drugs, and the arms trade. I accompany asylum seekers through the asylum process. In 2018, I cofounded Cosmovisiones Ancestrales to put forth a vision for processes of demobilization, disarmament, and reintegration. As digital coordinator for SoCal 350, I am working with others on encouraging LA city council members to pledge to a 2,500 ft. health and safety buffer between oil drilling sites and front line communities. We are also working to end oil extraction in the Los Cerritos Wetlands. We are raising consciousness on how California receives and refines 50% of the Amazon's crude.

What does your dream sustainable future look like & what do you see as some necessary steps to get there ?

It looks like a shift from corporate agriculture to cooperative, local food sovereignty and decentralized renewable energy production. It looks like abandoning fossil fuel extraction and returning to ancient ways of travel. I remember seeing some luxurious examples of how the ancient Egyptian aristocracy traveled by boat down the Nile River at the King Tut exhibit and I had an "aha" moment about how sustainable long distance travel could be possible if we committed the will power and patience.

What kind of hardships have you encountered in your life that drives you to create change?

My bodily autonomy has been disrespected more times than I can count. In 2013 I took matters into my own hands by educating myself to become a consent educator. I created my own content for my trainings and began training peers in consent culture in a student cooperative of 124 students. I am grateful for the opportunities I have had to bring this subject matter to music & art festivals as well. My parents have also lacked access to healthcare so I work towards educating myself in preventative healthcare via herbalism.

How are the social issues you are passionate connected to environmental issues as well?

I am passionate about ending the war on drugs, tearing down the border, and the freedom of movement. Transnational megaprojects that seek to clear indigenous territory for their projects hire cartel members to work in private paramilitaries to terrorize indigenous communities and destabilize the community. This is an underlying cause of forced migration to urban centers or further up north. These transnational mega projects also disrupt the natural order of the environment, further jeopardizing the planet's health. Also, I am Guatemayan and right now, there's an exodus from the northern triangle due to the destabilization caused by climate change and centuries of U.S. military intervention and colonialism. The invasion and plunder of parts of the world are in so much pain right now...

What are some self care rituals you do to keep hopeful & keep going?

My mom is no longer in this world, on this plane. I am trying to do trail running like she used to. I like to micro dose psilocybin when I'm very sad and this helps. I write in my journal, sing, go out dancing :)

What is some advice you would share with young artists/activists today?

Let's not procrastinate abolishing ICE, transitioning from fossil fuels, or resisting this administration. Delaying resistance to fascism/climate justice is the most dangerous kind of procrastination!

What are some organizations doing awesome work that you would suggest readers at home look into/ volunteer time with?

-Detention Watch Network has a great #DefundHate campaign

-Freedom for Immigrants

-Center for Biological Diversity

-Sunrise Movement

-Indigenous Environmental Network

-350.org

Just for fun~ whats your favorite color of Glitz?

Teal! It reminds me of mermaids :)

Anything else you would like to add?

Here's a mantra my mom would shout in the mornings:

"I am fearless! I am powerful! I am determined! I am unstoppable!"
